A collarless jacket in crepe-textured red wool from Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, Fall/Winter 1992. Six sculptural gold-and-black cabochon buttons run straight down the front, providing the piece's sole ornamentation against an otherwise unadorned silhouette — sharply tailored through the shoulder and fitted through the waist.

By 1992, Yves Saint Laurent had been directing the house for three decades, and Rive Gauche — launched in 1966 as the ready-to-wear expression of his couture vision — had long been the definitive address for French luxury prêt-à-porter.
