Vintage Yves Saint Laurent Gray Houndstooth Blazer, Late 1980s to Early 1990s
A single-breasted blazer in a flecked black, white and gray weave. A faint burgundy overcheck runs through the cloth. It has a notched lapel, padded shoulders, two dark buttons and a long, easy body, with hip pockets set into the front. The pattern is micro-scale, so it reads as a soft gray at a distance and resolves into houndstooth up close.
Yves Saint Laurent opened his house in Paris in 1961. With Rive Gauche in 1966 he put ready-to-wear tailoring at the center of the house, and he gave women the tuxedo the same year. This blazer carries that logic into the broad-shouldered proportions of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
